Mount Evans Monday – Road Ride from Golden

June 10, 2008

Brendan climbing strong
Brendan talked me into riding from Golden to the top of Mt Evans today.  he has never done a century (100mile bike ride) so he thought this would be a good time to do it!  he started in Denver and we met in Golden at the bike shop around 7:30am.  it was a great morning and a classic Colorado day with no clouds in the sky!  first, we headed up Lookout Mtn on our way to Mt Evans.  we climbed steadily up to Evergreen and over Squaw Pass to the lodge at Echo Lake.  we put some layers of clothing on and started the final ascent to the top.  after riding up hill for 50 miles and 4:45 hours, we finally got to the top!  it was beautiful and clear, which is rare at that height, but the wind was very cold!!!  we put all of our gear on, took some picts and headed back home!  the descent was not too bad, but the wind kept us from going too fast.  we got to the lodge again at Echo Lake, and had a hearty lunch.  all that was left was a 30 mile decent down to Golden.  it was nice to be back at lower altitude where it was warmer.  in the end, what took us almost 5 hours to climb, we flew down in 2 hours!  😉

it was a great time riding with Brendan cause there wasn’t the usual ‘fast racer pressure’ as with the other road rides i have done.  and once we got back to golden, Brendan still had to ride back to his home in Denver, so he ended up logging in over 125 miles!!!  congrats Brendan for setting a goal and making it happen!!

as always, a picture speaks a thousand words.  here is a link to a website of more photos from todays ride.

there has been a lot going on lately with friends and family becoming ill or passing away.
this day was to remind me that life is very precious!  do what you love and make the most of it!

love and peace. jesse

Gunnison Growler

June 10, 2008

Colin M’s Gunnison Growler Condensed Race Report – “Ow.  Yay! No, really I feel lucky to have ridden the 32 miles of Hartman Rocks trails (twice).  Beautiful scenery, excellent moto sculpted trails, great volunteers, and a well marked course.  The 7am Sunday start was a little drizzly and cold which had us sorting through clothes for warmer gear.  Thanks to Dave Weins for the Growler history lesson.  Yes there were carcasses out on course and I hope that the mountain lions enjoyed their meal.  Thanks for the private land owners for opening up their property for the race.”

64 miles, 1 clif bar, 4 gels, 1/2 banana, 1/4 orange, 6 Brawndo (THE THIRST MUTILATOR) drinks, one rigid singlespeed, and no blisters later I finished with a snot and salt infused smile.

Teva Games – TT

June 10, 2008

Team bikeparts.com rider, Charlie Knoll, headed to Vail the day after the XC to do the Vail Pass TT.  Here is his report… “it went well, not as well as last year but good enough for 3rd (Masters 35+).  Ben Day and Chris Baldwin both broke Andy Hampsten’s record to finish 1st and 2nd in the Open field.  I ran into them while doing the pre ride on Saturday, really nice guys.”  Congrats on the podium finish Charlie!  day_and_baldwin

Teva Games – XC

June 8, 2008

Yesterday, we loaded up the Tribeca and headed to Summit County for the Teva Games Cross Country.  Tim, Jon W, Tate G, Chad K, Jesse S, Ben L, and John P represented the team and debuted the new team clothing at the multi-sport event.  We got there a little early and decided to head up and pre ride the course.  The 5 mile course climbs from the start with a with fast, exposed and steep service road then funnels the racers into a descent of tight, twisty single track in the aspen.  Then right at the end of the lap, the race promoters felt we weren’t dirty enough, so they added a 1/2 mile extension onto the course through the deep mud and melting snow just for fun!  Click here for the GPS of the race. The course ended up being VERY tough after 5 laps and made every racer look deep inside to see what they had to finish the race!  Click here for the results! After wards, we watched the slopestyle warming up with back flips and had some pizza in the village.  It was a great day in Vail!  Congrats to every one who headed up and gave it their best! – swift

Mike Janelle – www.LiveLikeMike.org

June 5, 2008

Many of us knew Mike as a great friend, competitor and an all around nice fun guy to hang around with. I personally began racing against Mike in ’93 when he switched over to the MTB from the road. The Mike Janelle Gift Pak can be purchased at the link below. All proceeds from the Mike Janelle Gift Pak and Cycling Jersey go directly to the Mike Janelle Children’s Trust.

—————-

If you’ve been racing XC in the Rockies over the past decade chances are pretty good that you crossed paths with Mike Janelle at one time or another. For the past several years he’d been a staple on the Tokyo Joes squad. Shortly after Thanksgiving last year Mike was taken from his wife Maribel and then unborn son, Lil’ Mike. The folks at Tokyo Joes have set up a website where you can make a donation to help Mike’s family get through the next few years. In return, you’ll get an education about a man who lived life like it was meant to be lived. He was a sportsmanlike competitor, a friend to those in need and a beacon of hope to those mired in petty workday issues or seemingly endless 80-hour weeks at a desk. For your small donation you’ll also get some great swag – stuff that serves as a reminder to work to live, not the other way around. Please, visit  www.LiveLikeMike.org – even if only to remind yourself of how precious each day really is.

The BURN

June 2, 2008

The burn was a really cool event.  The trails were really fun – there were times when I would start looking around enjoying the terrain and scenery; then I’d have to remind myself “oh yeah, I’m racing, go faster!”.

Jon takes off at the start!

The time trial format was different for me.  It’s hard to motivate yourself to go hard when you’re out there by yourself and don’t know where you’re at compared to everyone.  I passed a lot of people and felt like I was doing pretty well.  On the last climb I got caught by the guy that started a minute after me.  We still had about 15 minutes left, so I put in a hard attack.  I dropped him and was able to put in a gap, but only got 30 seconds back on him.  He ended up winning, and I got 2nd in expert.

Bobbi (my wife) got her first xc win in the women’s expert!

Overall, it was a fun race and it lived up to its name!

Durango Mountain Bike Trails Update

June 2, 2008

I made it up to what we call the “High Point” on the Colorado trail yesterday before running into 2+ feet of snow on north facing slopes. The ride: Co Trail to Dry Fork, then hang a right to head on up to Kennebec. It will be a few more weeks – maybe until after July 4, until things open up. Trails 2000 launched a new website with a great trail map and pictures of Durango rides. Check out the following link: http://www.trails2000.org/site/interactive_map.html

2008 Iron Horse Criterium

May 26, 2008

Michael Carter won the men’s 35-39 crit this weekend at the Iron Horse. This is the second year in a row he worked the field with a mad attack with 6 laps to go. An unorganized chase failed to close down the gap to the flying Carter. You would think we would learn…

Cornering from Main to 7th before Carter dropped the hammer.

Oh, and Michael has finished a few more Tour De France’s than most of the other crit participants.
Matt Smith ended up 10th and Andy rounded out the top 20.

2008 Iron Horse Road Race Canceled

May 24, 2008

Its official, the 2008 Iron Horse Road Race and Citizens tour has been canceled due to incliment weather conditions. Temperatures at 32F and rain in town (at 6500 feet) translates to about 10F and 6 inches of snow at 10,640 feet (top of Coal Bank pass).

With over 2500 participants and only a small % with the gear to ride in such conditions, Iron Horse race promoters would have a small natural disaster on their hands if they let the race go.
