$9

April 28, 2009

steelmtbA friend of mine found this classic mountain bike at Good will for $9.00!!!  I teased him about the UniShox recall by in the ’90s.  Here is what he says about his find…

The fork is actually the only one not involved in the recalls. I had one on my Klein when originally built. It was my first suspension fork. I quickly upgraded to a Mag 21.
I pulled the fork apart last night. It was “stiction” seized. The grease was like glue. Anyway, I think with a good cleaning and some fresh lube, I’ll have a working pogo fork!!
It’s built with full Mountain LX, but someone changed to XT thumb shifters that look to be almost unused! Hell those go for 50-80 on ebay! I might do a full rebuild and flip it, or who knows, maybe throw the slicks on from the urban race and a front rack for errends…
Despite the “rigid” fork, it is ridable. Not too bad for under 10 bucks!

Fruita Fat Tire 14

April 28, 2009

Here is a movie Colin M sent me.

I got a video from a super nice guy that was on a the Ribbon/Holy Cross ride we did.  At one point you can see a blue and white blur.  That was me.  Henry is rocking the Schwable jersey.

Fruita Fat Tire Festival

April 27, 2009

ftfI went, brought the camera, and didn’t take a single photo.  In three days I rode Rabbit Valley (3/4/5/8) loops, Ribbon Trail, Holy Cross, Kessle Run, and Zippidee Do da.  Add to that two 30 mile dirt bike rides at Rabbit Valley and Road 18.  The motos were outrageously fun to have out in Fruita.

Paul at DT Swiss gave us the tour of Grand Junction with a first stop at the Distillery (www.peachstreetdistillers.com/), Ale House brewery, and then the famous Quincy’s dive bar.

We survived that night, raced the Cruiser Crit, and then celebrated the Fruita Fat Tire Festival at the Endzone where Kretlier helped put on a sprint race.  Unknown badassness ensued, and many victims fell.  It was grand.

So now I’ve done an Alley Cat (SSCX Worlds) and a Sprint (FFTF).  If I don’t have a fixed gear am I still a hipster?

Breckenridge Spring Classic

April 26, 2009

p1040320Breckenridge has it’s own version of the spring classics, except ours involves a little more than riding a road bike along some ancient cobblestones.  The Imperial Challenge has been a mainstay for the past fifteen or so years.  I use the race as a tune up for cycling season, a sort of gauge to see how fat and lazy I’ve gotten over the winter.  Some years things don’t go so well, other years I’ve proven that I’ll survive another year of maxing out my heart rate.  The Imperial Challenge starts off in town with a six or so mile bike ride, then you strap your skis on for an all out assult upwards to the 12,998 foot summit of peak eight, with over 3,500 feet ascending on the bike and skis.  Then, just when you thought things were going to be easy, the leg burning, muslcle cramping, hardest descent of your life takes you back down to the base area of the ski resort for a finish.
p1040323
This year was alittle different from out usual balmy mid-April days.  A monster snow storm blew in a few days before the race shutting down highways and throwing down snow measured in feet.  But like all things Breckenridge, the show had to go on.  I felt comfortable and at ease the whole race, trying not to over do it at any point and blow up.  The bike ride which takes place on dirt roads was a mixture of ice, mud, hardpack snow, and soft snow that threw many competitors off their bikes.  I took it slow and relaxed, adding almost ten minutes to the typical bike ride pace.  Then as we headed farther upward on skis, the weather and ability to see slowly diminished as you can see by parker’s race day photos.  Visibility easily was fiftty feet or less.  At the top I pulled the skins off the skis, tightened the boots up, plowed through the chunked up snow to the groomers, and finally to the finish line.   I finished around 2 hours 10 minutes not bad considering the weather.  My best time on a colorado picture perfect day was 1 hour 50 minutes.  – Jason Kompf

Wear that helmet

April 25, 2009

From Bill

– A friend of mine  got hit yesterday at Pierce and 44th, he is OK but very sore!  Amazing that the car that hit him caused the bike to break in half, the helmet to have a dent. Bob did not have any breaks but he did have a few dents – healing fairly well so far.

Crashes of Years Past – Update

April 23, 2009

Back in January, I gathered all the biking crash and scar photos from my friends and posted them in a photo blog, Crashes of Year Past.  I pulled them together to remind all of us that for all the miles and the years we have been riding, we do crash, but we always make it back home safe.  Well, relatively safe!  😉

Here is Mitch Westall’s submission to “Crashes of Years Past” .

Mitch Westall had a crash in July while out on riding his favorite trail, Indian Creek, that almost cost him his life…  here are 2 photos and his quick story….mitch-in-ccu-2

I started riding in late August with the neck brace on.  My doctor said I could ride Mid-Sept., I was racing 3 days later.

It was a C1 break (titanium car bolt in the neck), T9 compression, and the TBI.

I think the 70 stiches to the face,  the hellicopter ride, and the $110,000 medical bill will top the list.

Did you ever hear that the death alarm kept going off because my resting heart rate was too low — in the 40’s.

After that accident, I don’t think my resting heart rate has been below 60, but I’m working on it.

A new level of Trials riding

April 21, 2009

In the past 12 hours, 6 different buddies have sent me this Youtube video of a guy doing some of the most insane and creative urban trials riding EVER!  Brendan was the first to awaken me to this new level…

“So apparently no one should ever ride a trials bike ever again, it has all been done now!” -Brendan

I agree with B!  So sit back and prepare to have your mind blown!

MTB Racing Coverage

April 14, 2009

picture-1I have always been disappointed with pro mountain bike racing coverage.  Velonews would have some NORBA nationals race information but they would only write and take photos about the top 3 races.  Thanks to this site,  we finally have some good video coverage for the pro mtn bike racing fans.

Wow, I am really tired. I am still coughing up a lot of dust. I finally had a good Southern California race. The course here is really cool, pretty difficult though. They changed the it a lot from the previous years. Last year’s course was predominantly flat with some steep little pitches here and there, but this years course had some hill to it. In the first kilometer of the track, there was a climb that was really freaking steep and loose. It was an awesome change, It was nice to have some split in the race, but it also sucked a lot. You really had to save some gas for that climb every lap. I have never ridden something so steep and so challenging so many times, while going as fast as I can.

Like normal, I got a terrible start position, I really don’t understand how I keep getting these terrible start places. I even had UCI points from the previous year, and a top 30 overall ranking in the now defunct NMBS series from last year. Oh well, It worked out okay, although I am curious how I would have done had I gotten a place a little closer to the front. Any ways, I started right behind Trevor around 80th, we took the outside lines and they worked out pretty well. It was a crazy mad dash with over 120 guys starting in the Pro race, and it held together pretty well until that steep as hell climb called “the elevator”. There is where things got really crazy. I had to jump off and start running the climb, then someone swung there leg off and hit me right on the upper lip really hard with there shoe. I honestly thought I broke or chipped a tooth for over the first half of the race. With there being so many people behind me, I really didn’t have the option to stop or slow down. Then, finally after going through the technical downhill sections we met back up with the paved road and I could make up some places. As the race went then I got tangled with some other dude who kicked my front derailleur over and it was rubbing my chain the whole rest of the race. Quick note, there are a lot of Semi Pro’s who are racing pro and really shouldn’t be. I don’t necessarily mean fitness wise, but etiquette and also just how to race with the pro’s. Just my two cents. Any ways, I was really worried I was going to break a chain or something, but it held together really well. I made it through all 5 laps, feeling better and better as the race went on and got 53rd, passing over 30-40 guys from that climb.

It was a great feeling to come across the line knowing I had a great race. I am really hoping to build off this and have a good season. Another quick note, The new US Cup/ Pro XC tour is awesome. There were a bunch of people out there this weekend watching and cheering us on. The vibe was awesome, the scheduling was really well thought out and ran smoothly. They had awesome goody bags with free T shirts and In N Out Burger tickets. I was really impressed, I can honestly say that the future of mountain bike racing in the US is looking good.Plus the entry fee for Pro men, UCI race even, was only $45. My hat goes off to Scott Tedro and everyone at Sho-Air. Well my Ice cream is melting and Trevor’s parents have Formula One racing on so I need to go, but before I do, A huge thanks to Trevor Downing and his family, Sam Jurekovic, Bikeparts.com/Peak Cycles and everyone else who helped me get here. Thanks Again!

Sundays

April 12, 2009

img_0192After waking up to a damp and dark morning, I deliberated with friends, checked a couple weather forecasts and figured the weather wasn’t going to be getting any better.  So I suited up and headed up Lookout Mtn for a little mountain bike ride before the snow comes. It was a little chilly but there was no one else out and it was super quiet.  It was a nice ride in the fog and it got me thinking about another nice Sunday…

u2

Although that video was filmed in 1983 (Bono’s mullet is evidence of the era), it was only filmed about 2 miles from where my photo taken.  I hope you all got to enjoy your Sunday, even if it was foggy or bloody!
