E Days

March 30, 2009

Every year the local Golden college, Colorado School of Mines, celebrates E-Days…  and its EXPLOSIVE!!!  The engineering students actually make these fireworks and small bombs!  This year, the fireworks show will be April 2nd at 9:00pm at the CSM football field.  If you live in the Denver area, I highly recommend coming out to SEE and FEEL the show!  Just make sure that you wear something warm and have some patience for intoxicated college kids!

Here is a teaser video from 2007 E-Days

Summit County Live Update

March 29, 2009

stuff-0462I was about to make the official announcement that road bike season has started here in Summit County Colorado. Everything was falling into place with temperatures in the forties after work, dry roads, daylight until seven thirty, the county was hard at work plowing the bike paths.  The thought of epic rides up mountain passess in March danced in my head.  The last time I was on the road bike up here was Thanksgiving weekend, just before winter really kicked in.  I’ve been known ro ride all year around up here while most people slobber at the thought of heavy snowfalls and big days skiing.   Unfortuantly as I’ve gotten older, I rather wait till the weekend to ride.  Driving down to the front range to enjoy warmer temps and drier roads.  The thought of dodging ice patches, sliding out in piles of sand, fearing for my life because of oblivious tourists, and angry locals I now wait until everything is perfect then start riding up here.  Well that all happened sometime around the 14th of March.  I couldn’t get enough, the thought of mountain biking in a few months made the smile even bigger.  Well…….  time to get the ski’s back out and forget about all that.  The temperature dropped forty something degrees in a few hours Sunday night and it hasn’t stopped snowing since. Maybe next week I’ll make a revised statement that Summit County is open for road biking.

shelbertoAnother sweet video from one of Goldens up and coming high school mountain bike gromits!  Nice work on that drop!!!

Sorry…

March 28, 2009

I recently realized its been a while since I have updated the blog.  It made me think…  is my life boring?  Has nothing exciting happened?  Am i tired of wasting time in front of a computer?  OF COURSE NOT!!!!

The answer to my lack of blogging is that I have actually been riding!  Chad K has been working me over on his 2 hour afterwork rides!  Then went up to Loveland and rode the Devils Backbone to Horsetooth, and awesome MTB ride (other then the cop that pulled Matt over for speeding on the way up there!)  Then we hit some of Evergreens steep hills on the road bike.  On Fridau, Tyler and I hit Woodward on the DJ bikes.  Speaking of which, Matt was recently bit by the DJ bug.

We also had a birthday party for Charlie Knoll who turned 40 this past week!  He is proof that age is a state of mind!  He does more things in a week then most 20 year olds.  Riding bikes, traveling all over, sking fresh snow and like most 20 year olds, drinking lots of beer!
Then, like every spring, after 2 weeks of above normal temperatures, it SNOWED!  Not just a little snow… a good 14″ or more here in Golden.
But lucky for ‘Fast’ Colin Osborn, he escaped the Colorado snow and is out in California this weekend for the first Pro XC National race in Fontana!  It may seem early for the rest of us, but he has been training for this first race since November!  Good luck Lil C!

So, while it may seem I have been MIA, its just because the weather was nice and I was out riding my bike.  I hope this snow melts quick and we can all get back to what we love and ride our bikes!  🙂  –  jesse

Taken from the Velonews article about his 2009 race bike!

Speaking of which… Ross is riding for Crank Bros this year, and Tyler found Ross here as well!

March 11, 2009

Wednesday Group Ride

March 10, 2009

p6060014_11Meet at Peak Cycles in Golden this Wednesday, March 11, for the 1st group mountain bike ride of the year.  We are going to leave at 6:30pm and head over to South Table Mesa.  I know, I know… usually we climb up Chimney Gulch and fly down Apex, but we are going to keep the ride simple while we don’t have a ton of daylight.  We don’t want any dusk- broken finger-elbow stitches crash, right Tate?!  😉

Mustache Ride ’09

March 10, 2009

p3080252After 2 months of facial hair growth, we headed to Boulder to hook up with Josh Kravetz for his Urban Assault Mustache Ride 2009.  It was a nice day out riding with the crew except for Tate’s 5 mechanicals on the ride.  I just hope Tate’s 2 flats and broken chain get out of the way now instead of plaguing him during the race season!  😉

Check out the ‘staches that BPC brought to the table… and then head over the Urban Assault Blog to vote for your favorite ‘stache!

La Tierra Torture

March 8, 2009

Even though MSC changed the race fees this week back to a reasonable fee, I am still looking forward to and planning on racing ‘NORBA FREE’ this season.  Mitch found this Non NORBA race down in Santa Fe called La Tierra Torture!

torture

I asked Santa Fe local, Tom (aka El Toro), what he knew about the race and this was his reply….

it’s a great little trail system … rolling, twisting, turning, fun! if we don’t get rain, the arroys will be really sandy, but it would be a fun race!  you guys would CRUSH some people out there!! – Tom

So, sorry MSC, it looks like the first race of the year will not be in Fruita, but the down in the Land of Enchantment! – Swift

Blackhills Fat Tire Festival

March 2, 2009

blackhillsWhile we are all discussing the raise in MSC race fees… 😦

It is nice to find other race options like the Black Hills Fat Tire Festival!  They are offering a ton of different races; XC, Super D, Hill Climbs, and Off Road Tri.  So, this may be the first year I head to South Dakota instead of New Mexico on Memorial Day…

Bike Polo in Lyons-Update

February 26, 2009

bikepoloHey Cyclists,
Attached is the tourney poster and updated info sheet.
Please know that rules are not my cup of tea, but are necessary for a
gathering of polo hounds. We all play a slightly different version of the
game but in the end its all the same. Score a goal, play some D and be a
gentleman. Check out the breakfast info below.
Peace
Cheeney

“I’ve enlisted another Lyons local to provide a small breakfast for teams
during the entry process.  Denise makes the most bad ass breakfast choice,
the breggo.  The Breggo is a breakfast delight made with homemade bread,
filled with egg and potato along with your choice of spicy Italian sausage,
ham, bacon, veggies, or Mediterranean style.”

Check it out    http://www.breggos.com/

“She’ll have them there & warm before 9:00 Saturday March 7th.  Add the info
‘round as we continue to promote – peace”

Nail in the Coffin

February 22, 2009

On the group ride today, Colin M told us that the MSC race fees for the Pro class has been increased…

Here is the flyer for the first race in Rabbit Valley… I love that the total racing time for BOTH the XC and ST should be less then 1 hour, 30 min.  That almost $1.75 per minute of racing, what an awesome deal!!?!??!  msc-price

Teva Games

February 19, 2009

timbarnes-1The Teva Games are coming back to Vail at the beginning of June.  The XC race is Saturday June 6th, 2009 with the Vail Pass Hill Climb the next day, Sunday June 7th, 2009.  It was a brutal course last year!  Hopefully the snow melts in time and they add some sort of descent!  😉

Bike Polo in Lyons

February 18, 2009

Photo Removed –

“We are doing a grass tourney and I don’t want to give the cool fixie kids any ideas.”

From the email of Chad Cheney at DurangoDevo…

Hey There Fellas,
Saturday March 7th in Lyons, Colorado will be the first modern grass bike
polo tournament in the history of the mountain states. Lyons is located on
the front range between Boulder and Fort Collins.

The game will be 4v4 with new school rules. If you touch the grass, you must pedal one revolution forward, or get out of the way. Bike on bike contact is not allowed. We will use goals provided by the Fort Collins Bike Hockey team which are about 6x8ft. Teams have the option of playing a goalie. The ball will be a size 1 soccerball. The field will allow for two games at once. Uniforms or costumes are mandatory.

The tournament will be capped at 16 teams. Games start at 10am with round robin format. The Championship Bracket will begin at 3pm. Games will be played to 3 in the round robin and 5 in the championship bracket.

Cost is $40 per team, includes post game meal at the Oskar Blues party barn.  Live music at the Osckar Blues Brewery will follow. There is in town camping available and host housing can be arranged.

Please spread the word to your fellow mates and feel free to contact me with any questions. This action is being organized by Dale and Chad from Oskar Blues Brewery and myself
