In South Dakota, Tate, Matt and I stay at this cool old hotel called Hotel Alex Johnson… the only problem was the elevator was a little small.  Here is a photo of 3 guys and 3 bikes in the cramped space!

Lyons Bike Park

June 10, 2009

Lyons DJBrian, Tyler, Bill, the Boys and I headed up to Lyons to check out the Lyons Bike Park.  At the park, there is a pump track, a mtb bike skills course and 3 different dirt jump lines.  They created this park over the past couple weeks for the Lyons Outdoor Games. There is going to be a pump track comp and a dirt jump comp happening THIS weekend!  Over all the park was fun and a little rough when we rode it, but it definitely has potential!  IMG_0032

Jeffco Trail Survey

June 10, 2009

P5310081I received the following email today about the Apex trail in Golden..  Click on the link and let your thoughts be known!  http://dev.comba. org/apex_ survey.html

Hey Folks,

This is a pretty serious issue and requires you to please act to maintain access to many of the trails that you have grown to love. Jefferson County has been getting a lot of heat on Apex conflict and is looking for user feedback on the use of this trail. Don’t kid yourself thinking that whatever the result is won’t result in a spill over to many more of the Front Range trails that you care about.

COMBA has been heading up discussions with Jeffco and has asked for the mountain bike community to speak up and be heard. Quantity matters much more than quality at this point. The more that we show that mountain bikers value Apex, the more we will have our voice heard. Just a couple of tips on what should be communicated:

1) Appreciation for all the work/effort from Jeffco for maintaining these trails for ALL users

2) Speak with a subtle voice and do not create more disparity to the issue. Rather we want to communicate that the conflict is minor and through some creativity it can be easily resolved.

3) Tell them how much you use the Apex trail system and how important it is to the Denver mountain bike community since it offers a nice, technically challenging trail to residents of Jefferson County without having to drive a long way to get there.

There are 3 ways to participate and I ask that you please do all 3.

1) Go to this link and fill out the questionaire so that Jefferson County hears your individual voice: http://dev.comba. org/apex_ survey.html

2) Attend at least one of the Open Houses in person that Jefferson County is holding to discuss with all trail users. Two open Houses will be held in June at the Open Space Ponderosa Meeting Room located at 700 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden (In same complex as Taj Mahal). A large turnout from mountain bikers will help ensure our standing in these important discussions! Mark your calendars and attend if you can: Thursday, June 18, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m; Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.

3) Forward this email onto all of your mountain bike friends and personally ask them to participate.

Let’s show Jefferson County that we are united, appreciate the work that they do, care about trail access and are willing to mobilze to keep our trails open to biking.

Warm Regards,

Marv Storey

Here is a photo shoot we did in the alleyway.  enjoy!

Ride In Peace

May 20, 2009

larsen99_mtn1sElite triathlete and former national mountain bike champion Steve Larsen died of a sudden heart attack while running at Cascade Middle School on Tuesday night.

That’s terribly sad.  I’ll never forget being at the Deer Valley NCS race when he annihilated the field.  He had shaved his head and was looking for revenge against those that claimed he was washed up. – Colin M.

Thanks Garmin!

April 30, 2009

Last year was my first adventure in the world of tracking my rides via GPS.  I liked the details the GPS give you and quickly started using it on all my rides.  I started with a Garmin Edge 205, but lost it in a crash during a Super D race.  So, I ordered another one to have during the BC Bike Race.  But… that one stayed on my bike about 5 miles into the first day and was lost somewhere in the dirt on Vancouver Island.  I was super sad, but still wanted to use a GPS on my rides, so I got the Garmin Forerunner 405, which is similar to the 205 but it has a watch band.   My thought is now it would be REALLY hard to lose to the GPS because of the strap band.  So on my last trip to Fruita, I crashed a little hard and tossed my ML8.  Here is how the crash treated my Garmin 405 GPS watch…img_46232

I got pretty beat up as well, so I headed back to the car after the crash.  Even though the GPS was shattered, it still managed to record the rest of the ride… check it out here.  Lunch Loops GPS.  I was pretty bummed about ruining the third GPS in 1 year.  I wrote a letter to Garmin and they said they would do a crash replacement warranty on it.  I was skeptical because of the major damage, but I sent in the broken unit anyway.  Then today I was pleasantly surprised when I opened my front door to see a little box from Garmin on my porch!  Thanks Garmin!!!!  photo

$9

April 28, 2009

steelmtbA friend of mine found this classic mountain bike at Good will for $9.00!!!  I teased him about the UniShox recall by in the ’90s.  Here is what he says about his find…

The fork is actually the only one not involved in the recalls. I had one on my Klein when originally built. It was my first suspension fork. I quickly upgraded to a Mag 21.
I pulled the fork apart last night. It was “stiction” seized. The grease was like glue. Anyway, I think with a good cleaning and some fresh lube, I’ll have a working pogo fork!!
It’s built with full Mountain LX, but someone changed to XT thumb shifters that look to be almost unused! Hell those go for 50-80 on ebay! I might do a full rebuild and flip it, or who knows, maybe throw the slicks on from the urban race and a front rack for errends…
Despite the “rigid” fork, it is ridable. Not too bad for under 10 bucks!

Fruita Fat Tire Festival

April 27, 2009

ftfI went, brought the camera, and didn’t take a single photo.  In three days I rode Rabbit Valley (3/4/5/8) loops, Ribbon Trail, Holy Cross, Kessle Run, and Zippidee Do da.  Add to that two 30 mile dirt bike rides at Rabbit Valley and Road 18.  The motos were outrageously fun to have out in Fruita.

Paul at DT Swiss gave us the tour of Grand Junction with a first stop at the Distillery (www.peachstreetdistillers.com/), Ale House brewery, and then the famous Quincy’s dive bar.

We survived that night, raced the Cruiser Crit, and then celebrated the Fruita Fat Tire Festival at the Endzone where Kretlier helped put on a sprint race.  Unknown badassness ensued, and many victims fell.  It was grand.

So now I’ve done an Alley Cat (SSCX Worlds) and a Sprint (FFTF).  If I don’t have a fixed gear am I still a hipster?
