Oh, I figured it out… money

Green

March 30, 2009

More from “The Desk of Mitch Westall”

GREEN things commonly missed.

Things you can do to help our children, our childrens’ children and so on.

1. Recycle — Most things can be recycled,  except organics.   2/3’s
of my trash is recycled.  1/3 — mostly kitchen stuff, toilet paper,
paper towls are not.   In my neighborhood.  I would guess only 1 in 8
families actually recycle — even though our trash company recycles.

2. Recycle at the bike shop.  I discovered not all bike shops recycle.
Metal parts should not end up in the landfills.   No carbon parts as
carbon can not currently be recycled.

3.  No store bought or shipped bottled water.  It is not right to
spend energy to ship water by automobiles.   Filter the water from the
tap is the best solution.  Use reuseable water bottles.    This is
basic energy conservation.   You don’t get your basic foods from
Russia do you?   No, cause there is good food grown here locally.
Buy locally if available.

4.  Don’t drive.  You have legs and an ability that most people don’t.
Use the burley to get your groceries.   Ride to go to dinner with
the wife downtown.   As racers / MTBers  we already drive more than
most to go play and race.   Hence we need to make up for this and
commute / ride to decrease our carbon footprint.   Combine errands
when you do drive.  Carpool whenever possible.

5.  If you have money, you have a greater responsibility to be
environmental conscientious.  If is not fair for a rich person to
drive a car getting 10 mpg in the esclade just because they can.
Nor for a huge house for a small family without any green features.
Buildings consume 1/3 the total US energy consumption.

6.  Reuse, reuse, reuse,  don’t throw away the old car you drive.
Drive it until the repair exceeds the value of the car.  When you buy
new — buy green.  This simply rule, may make you look poor to
everyone that sees you in your car.   But may make you very wealthy —
cause cars loose substantial amounts of money.     If you have extra
cash put it in your business, your house, your family, your bike —
things you live with more often than the time spent in a car.

7.  If you are going to throw something out.  Put it on Craigslist —
see it anyone else may find value in it.

My reason why — there is finite amount of easy energy — oil, gas and
coal on this earth.   Modern Humans have existed for what 1,500,0000
million years.  Average life span of 60 years, meaning I’m the 25,000
offspring.   If we use it all up, future generations will do without.
The future, technology exists but no energy to do it with.   Every
renewable energy source starts with easy energy, oil, gas and coal to
do it with.    This is similar to religion — not belief in a God —
but belief that the human race will continue and will need the
resources that we are leaving behind.   Hence as a religion I am a
sinner and I’m trying to correct my ways.   I do believe there will be
innovations that make life better — but until they are discovered and
are found viable — let’s be responsible to the future.

E Days

March 30, 2009

Every year the local Golden college, Colorado School of Mines, celebrates E-Days…  and its EXPLOSIVE!!!  The engineering students actually make these fireworks and small bombs!  This year, the fireworks show will be April 2nd at 9:00pm at the CSM football field.  If you live in the Denver area, I highly recommend coming out to SEE and FEEL the show!  Just make sure that you wear something warm and have some patience for intoxicated college kids!

Here is a teaser video from 2007 E-Days

Summit County Live Update

March 29, 2009

stuff-0462I was about to make the official announcement that road bike season has started here in Summit County Colorado. Everything was falling into place with temperatures in the forties after work, dry roads, daylight until seven thirty, the county was hard at work plowing the bike paths.  The thought of epic rides up mountain passess in March danced in my head.  The last time I was on the road bike up here was Thanksgiving weekend, just before winter really kicked in.  I’ve been known ro ride all year around up here while most people slobber at the thought of heavy snowfalls and big days skiing.   Unfortuantly as I’ve gotten older, I rather wait till the weekend to ride.  Driving down to the front range to enjoy warmer temps and drier roads.  The thought of dodging ice patches, sliding out in piles of sand, fearing for my life because of oblivious tourists, and angry locals I now wait until everything is perfect then start riding up here.  Well that all happened sometime around the 14th of March.  I couldn’t get enough, the thought of mountain biking in a few months made the smile even bigger.  Well…….  time to get the ski’s back out and forget about all that.  The temperature dropped forty something degrees in a few hours Sunday night and it hasn’t stopped snowing since. Maybe next week I’ll make a revised statement that Summit County is open for road biking.

Sorry…

March 28, 2009

I recently realized its been a while since I have updated the blog.  It made me think…  is my life boring?  Has nothing exciting happened?  Am i tired of wasting time in front of a computer?  OF COURSE NOT!!!!

The answer to my lack of blogging is that I have actually been riding!  Chad K has been working me over on his 2 hour afterwork rides!  Then went up to Loveland and rode the Devils Backbone to Horsetooth, and awesome MTB ride (other then the cop that pulled Matt over for speeding on the way up there!)  Then we hit some of Evergreens steep hills on the road bike.  On Fridau, Tyler and I hit Woodward on the DJ bikes.  Speaking of which, Matt was recently bit by the DJ bug.

We also had a birthday party for Charlie Knoll who turned 40 this past week!  He is proof that age is a state of mind!  He does more things in a week then most 20 year olds.  Riding bikes, traveling all over, sking fresh snow and like most 20 year olds, drinking lots of beer!
Then, like every spring, after 2 weeks of above normal temperatures, it SNOWED!  Not just a little snow… a good 14″ or more here in Golden.
But lucky for ‘Fast’ Colin Osborn, he escaped the Colorado snow and is out in California this weekend for the first Pro XC National race in Fontana!  It may seem early for the rest of us, but he has been training for this first race since November!  Good luck Lil C!

So, while it may seem I have been MIA, its just because the weather was nice and I was out riding my bike.  I hope this snow melts quick and we can all get back to what we love and ride our bikes!  🙂  –  jesse

Recent Ross Schnell Sighting

Tyler found these couple of articles on Colorados XC and DH and Super D and All Around BA, Ross Schnell!

Taken from the Velonews article about his 2009 race bike!

Speaking of which… Ross is riding for Crank Bros this year, and Tyler found Ross here as well!

Wednesday Group Ride

March 10, 2009

p6060014_11Meet at Peak Cycles in Golden this Wednesday, March 11, for the 1st group mountain bike ride of the year.  We are going to leave at 6:30pm and head over to South Table Mesa.  I know, I know… usually we climb up Chimney Gulch and fly down Apex, but we are going to keep the ride simple while we don’t have a ton of daylight.  We don’t want any dusk- broken finger-elbow stitches crash, right Tate?!  😉

Mustache Ride ’09

March 10, 2009

p3080252After 2 months of facial hair growth, we headed to Boulder to hook up with Josh Kravetz for his Urban Assault Mustache Ride 2009.  It was a nice day out riding with the crew except for Tate’s 5 mechanicals on the ride.  I just hope Tate’s 2 flats and broken chain get out of the way now instead of plaguing him during the race season!  😉
